MG3 Hybrid+

2026-10-02 18:20:01

Model Overview

The MG3 Hybrid+ is the third-generation all-new MG3 introduced in 2024 by SAIC Motor's MG brand. Positioned as a B-segment hybrid hatchback (subcompact hatch), it is engineered to take on established ICE and hybrid rivals in Europe and Southeast Asia, such as the Toyota Yaris and Volkswagen Polo, through exceptional value-for-money and advanced hybrid tech. Making its global premiere at the 2024 Geneva Motor Show, the car was first launched in Thailand in August of the same year, serving as a headline model for MG's centenary celebration.

As a global strategic model, the MG3 Hybrid+ features SAIC's in-house developed second-generation Hybrid+ system, underscoring the marque's core strategy of transitioning from internal combustion to high-efficiency electrification. Thanks to its competitive pricing and generous standard kit, the hatch quickly gained traction across various markets. In Thailand, retail prices range from 579,900 to 619,900 THB (around RM119,000 to RM128,000). In the UK market, the MG3 Hybrid+ is offered in two variants—SE and Trophy—with on-the-road (OTR) prices starting from £18,495, while the range-topping Trophy variant starts at £20,495.

Design Language

The MG3 Hybrid+ embraces MG's latest "Emotional Dynamism" design language, delivering a sharp, aggressive aesthetic that marks a radical departure from its predecessor. Up front, the fascia is highlighted by a set of striking LED headlamps, complemented by boomerang-style bumper corner vents and an imposing blacked-out mesh grille for a bold, sporty presence. Along the sides, segmented character lines create a sculpted, muscular silhouette, paired with dual-tone diamond-cut alloy wheels and a low-slung stance that exudes hot-hatch flair. The rear is clean and cohesive, featuring taillights with dashed LED light guides and a subtle roof spoiler; while taking styling cues from European hot hatches, it retains a distinct visual identity.

In terms of exterior dimensions, the new hatch measures 4,113 mm in length, 1,797 mm in width, and 1,502 mm in height, with a 2,570 mm wheelbase. This size increase across the board over the outgoing model provides a more planted stance while directly expanding cabin space and practicality. With a kerb weight of 1,285 kg, it remains impressively lightweight for a hybrid in this class.

Powertrain and Performance

The powertrain is undoubtedly the main highlight of the MG3 Hybrid+. Under the bonnet is SAIC's proprietary second-generation Hybrid Plus technology—an electric-drive-biased petrol-electric hybrid setup. The powertrain comprises a 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, a permanent magnet synchronous electric drive motor, and an independent motor-generator, paired with an innovative three-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT).

On the output front, the 1.5-litre petrol unit produces 75 kW (around 102 PS) and 128 Nm of torque, while the electric motor punches out 100 kW (around 136 PS) and 250 Nm of torque. Combined, the hybrid setup delivers an impressive total system output of 143 kW (around 194 PS) and up to 310 Nm of torque.

This potent setup enables the MG3 Hybrid+ to sprint from 0-100 km/h in just 8.0 seconds, while mid-range 50-70 mph (approx. 80-113 km/h) acceleration takes only 5.0 seconds, delivering instantaneous overtaking power on both urban streets and highways. Efficiency-wise, it achieves an impressive combined fuel consumption rating as low as 4.4 L/100 km on the WLTP cycle, with real-world tests in Thailand recording figures as frugal as 3.8 L/100 km. Top speed in full EV mode is capped at 80 km/h, powered by a 1.83 kWh traction battery.

Chassis and Handling

Built on an all-new architecture engineered specifically for hybrid packaging, the MG3 Hybrid+'s chassis and suspension have been tuned by SAIC's Longbridge engineering team in the UK to suit diverse road conditions, striking an ideal balance between ride comfort and MG's trademark agile handling. Notably, compared to the previous generation's basic rear torsion beam setup, the third-generation MG3 features a far more refined suspension calibration for enhanced dynamic agility and road holding.

To cater to varied driving conditions, the MG3 Hybrid+ offers three selectable drive modes: Eco, Standard, and Sport, allowing drivers to tweak throttle response and steering weight. The braking setup includes an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Hold, which significantly eases driving in start-stop city traffic. As a front-wheel-drive (FWD) hatch, its front-end geometry delivers sharp turn-in and nimble handling.

Cabin and Equipment

Inside, the MG3 Hybrid+ boasts a modern digital cockpit with a minimalist, high-tech dashboard layout. The driver is greeted by a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster paired with a 10.25-inch floating central touchscreen infotainment display, creating a seamless dual-screen interface.

The infotainment system supports built-in satellite navigation as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, greatly boosting multimedia and usability. A rotary gear selector, similar to the one found in the MG4 EV, frees up valuable centre console storage space while adding a sleek, modern touch. The cabin features two-tone combination upholstery (fabric and synthetic leather), enhancing visual depth and seating comfort. Other notable appointments include a six-speaker audio system, multiple USB ports, and a practical 293-litre boot for everyday usability.

Safety and Driver Assistance

On the active safety front, the MG3 Hybrid+ comes fitted with the "MG Pilot" Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), which uses integrated sensor fusion for active collision prevention. Key ADAS features include full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) operational from 0 to 160 km/h, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) to keep the car securely centred.

Additionally, the range-topping Trophy variant adds a 360-degree surround-view camera, Blind Spot Detection (BSD), and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) for stress-free low-speed manoeuvring and parking. Passive safety is well-covered with a comprehensive array of airbags as standard, offering robust crash protection for all occupants.

Market Performance and Reception

Since its debut, the MG3 Hybrid+ has earned widespread acclaim across global markets for its standout value proposition and sophisticated hybrid powertrain. In both 2024 and 2025, the model clinched the prestigious "Affordable Hybrid of the Year" award from renowned UK motoring publication Auto Express, with judges lauding its blend of hybrid efficiency and outstanding value as one of the best buys in the segment.

The hatch has achieved equal success in Southeast Asia, earning recognition in Thailand as one of the most powerful B-segment hatchbacks on the market and racking up significant bookings thanks to its class-leading fuel economy and performance. In Europe, by undercutting traditional ICE competitors on price while offering superior standard equipment, it serves as a formidable challenger to mainstays like the Volkswagen Polo and Toyota Yaris, appealing strongly to fleet buyers and first-time car owners alike. Marking a major milestone in MG's global expansion, the MG3 Hybrid+'s rollout across developed markets proves that SAIC's self-developed hybrid tech is fully ready to take on the world's best.
